As promised...today I will give you a quick little tutorial on making a handmade party banner! With just a few basic sewing skills you can create a lovely banner like this!
You will need:
-fabric that makes you happy
-chalk pencil for tracing
-chalk pencil for tracing
-pinking shears
-bias tape
-pins
-a sewing machine
First you will want to make a triangle shape pattern to trace. I just used a scrap piece of cardstock. My triangle is about 4.5 inches along the top and the sides are almost 6 inches.
Begin tracing the triangles on the back side of your fabric. I used a chalk pencil, but a regular pencil will work just fine. You will need a front and a back for each triangle. {Tip: fold over the fabric and trace/cut two at once.}
Cut triangles with pinking shears. This will keep them from fraying. Also, the cute zig-zag pattern will keep you from sewing all the way around the triangles and then turning them.
Sew along the two sides of each triangle. There is no need to stitch the top because it will be under the bias tape. Be sure to backstitch/tac at the beginning and end.
Now remove the pins and place each triangle one at a time in between the bias tape folds. Pin along the bias tape so that the fabric stays in place. If your not in the mood to make your own, you can purchase one from a site like etsy! However, don't be intimidated to try it. No one said it had to be perfect!

I have never sewed - but just ordered a beginner sewing machine thanks to a program at my work! So I'm excited to give it a try. Would something like this be a good beginner project for a novice? I love it - I've actually looked at ordering one on Etsy in the past, but would be so much cooler if I made it!!
ReplyDeleteIt looks so great on the headboard of that bed! I have seen these banners a few times, they are so cute and whimsical...great tutorial :)
ReplyDeleteLove it! I should make a boy one and girl one that i clan use year after year for the kids' birthday parties!
ReplyDeleteManda Jane- Sewing is so much fun! You will be amazed at what you can create. This would be a great project to start with because you're only sewing strait lines. Using the pinking shears is much easier than sewing the wrong sides and then turning them. I would love to see pics when you finish!
ReplyDeleteDallas- thanks...I wanted to find a way to somehow use it in my daughters room!
Amy- You should...it was super simple!
Hhhhmmmm I should try this, but I don't have any fabric scraps... Maybe I should start collecting those first.
ReplyDeleteYes, you should Louana...it's super easy :)
