A Few New Things...

I NEED some serious retail therapy!! And I mean NOW!

I mean, I feel like I deserve a few new things. I haven't bought any new clothes in like a year...seriously. When you're preggers, you don't really have the desire because well...you have the hope that you're not always gonna be that size.{even though it feels like you will be}And post preggers, you're still hoping to drop those last few pounds. Which is were I am now.

But these pretties have no weight limit...

Paper Banner DIY

This is as easy as it gets! Remember the handmade party banner DIY? Same concept minus the sewing.

All you need is...
:: twine/yarn
:: scrapbook paper
:: stapler
:: scissors

All you need to do is cut out several triangles. The amount depends on how long you want the banner to be.

Once you have the triangles cut, just space them out evenly along the piece of yarn or twine. Then attach them with the stapler!

Bam. You have an easy peasy paper banner!

Hope you love it.

Get Organized for a New School Year with Manda Jane

Hi everyone! I'm Amanda. You can find me over at Elf House Chronicles. Autumn was so sweet to ask me to guest blog for her and make it a 'Back to School' theme. This suited me perfectly. You see, I'm a brand new step-mom to four kiddos (ages 10, 12, 14 & 16). I have no kids of my own, so this is my first experience with raising kids and all the fun that goes along with it! School starts here on August 22 - so I've had my hands full with school supply shopping, school clothes shopping, orientations, meet the teacher nights and athletics parent meetings. Mind you, these are all brand new things to me and I'm just trying to keep up and learn as I go.

As you can imagine, with 4 kids, things stay extremely busy. One thing about me (which I myself find to be a positive trait), is my need and love of organization and structure. I need to have a calendar on hand at all times. I keep a running grocery list. I need everyone to know what the rules and expectations are so we have a smooth running household. So, in order for us to get ready for back to school (and since we're a newly blended family), the first thing we did was set 'House Rules' and held a family meeting to discuss these and open the floor for discussion and debate. I think these rules are imperative with school starting back up. A structured home is a happy home. A few of the highlights of our rules are that we will be eating dinner together as a family nightly, doing our homework together as a family nightly, we are required to eat at least one healthy snack after school or before bed and after 9:30 we shut down all social media, computers, phones, etc. We are getting there slowly, but surely. The good news is David and I follow through with enforcing our House Rules and always back each other up.

Another brilliant idea I've come up with to help organize our super hectic life is a Home Management Binder. This was no original idea. I actually ran across the idea while cruising Pinterest (if you're not on there, you must go today and get signed up). I did a little research and visited a few websites and decided we needed one for our family. I'm still in the process of completing it, but I can tell you that our binder will contain:

  • a master calendar
  • a menu planner
  • a grocery shopping list
  • a financial planner (or something to help us with our budget)
  • all school correspondance (i.e. athletic calendars, bell schedules, school calendar, etc)
  • master phone list (parents, kids, grandparents, doctors, vet, etc)
  • insurance information
  • blogging planner/calendar (for me)
  • to do list/chore list

My thought process is that this one binder will be the 'brain' of our family. Anyone should be able to pick this up and know where we are supposed to be, what we need from the grocery store, how to get in touch with someone. My belief is we will add to it or change it around as we figure out what works for us. Here are some websites I'm using that have free printables so that you can do your own Home Management Binder:

So, that's how we're gearing up for back to school. It's important that this Momma stays organized and on top of everything. I would hate to be the one to forget someone at school or practice or miss an important event! Not to mention, I still want to make sure everyone is eating healthly, sleeping well and making fantastic grades! It's going to be a fast paced school year, but welcome to our crazy and chaotic life!

Lots of Love...

Whew! That was a lot. When I am not blogging, I love spending time with my family.
Family is #1 to me.
In thinking about family, it often brings me back to fond memories of childhood-especially around this time of year-Back to School!

Autumn asked me to write about Back to School and I thought about how excited I would be to go back to school as a child. My mom would take me shopping for a new outfit for the first day of school and I just loved picking out my lunch box for the year. I remember her taking time to come visit me once or twice a year and play "Red Rover" with my friends and I on the playground.

One of my best memories of childhood and back to school was something my parents did throughout the year.

 Read.

They would read to me when I was too young to know how. When I was learning to read they would help me along. When I was old enough to read, my parents took my siblings and I to the library weekly, especially in the summer. My parents always encouraged reading and what a gift that was! It made back to school fun because I knew that I would get to read new books in english class!

I thought it would be fun to share some of my all time favorite children's books. I'd love to hear about your experience with reading and/or your favorite books!

Today I want to share a few links with you that may inspire you to do something special for your child or his/her teacher on the First Day!

Vintage Window Re-Do

Remember this old window I bought on one of my treasure hunts?

It's been sitting on my mantle for months and I just stare at it wondering what to do with it. In checking my most favorite blog I found this...

via
 Light bulb on! What a great idea. I had everything I needed. So I put a little paint on the window and used these thang-a-majigers to on the side so that I could tie the twine.

Next step is just to find a place to hang it and use these little cuties to hang the pics with.

I had just the spot! Above our dining room table. Perfect for my kitchen re-do. It looks just lovely next to the sweet retro phone left behind by the 60's!

Moral of the story...never, ever pass up an old window{or shutter} even if you don't have a plan for it...that's what pinterest is for!

A Picnic and a Pedicure

If you saw my summer list, then you probably noticed carpet picnic as one of my to-do's. So simple and so much fun! Plus it's bug free.

Once the grub's ready, you set up just like you would if you were outside. Toss a blanket on the floor, maybe a few pillows, and of course fresh flowers and boom...you have a carpet picnic.

Even Lucy was able to join us!

Of course, she ate the Oreo first!

After lunch, Ella Cate picked out some polish and we{as in me}gave ourselves a lovely little pedicure.

Lucy got a little upset that we didn't paint hers.

Such a simple idea with memories to last a lifetime!
