WIWW: The 45 Minute Skirt ((a tutorial))

So, I'm completely uncomfortable having my picture made. Completely. I mean look at me. I can't even look you in the eye. But I really am trying to step out of my comfort zone and become more comfortable with me and I really wanted to share this easy skirt tutorial with all of you.

Sequined Strip Tank- JCrew
Skirt- made by yours truly
Peep toe heels- JCrew
Neck bling- YellowHeartArt
Mint Ruffled fold over clutch- my shop

Some of you may have seen something similar as a dress tutorial, but I didn't like the idea of being locked into one option. So I thought if I just made the skirt part, the I can easily change out the tank and switch it up. I'm even thinking it will be cute this fall with a tight fitting long sleeve and some boots!

This skirt really only took me about 45 minutes from start to finish and now that I've made it once, I'm sure I could make more in less time. Enough chatter. On with the show.

You'll need enough fabric to wrap around your waist 1 and 1/2 times. I bought about a yard and a half and had plenty. Also, you'll need 2 inch elastic. I bought mine at Joann's for about 5 bucks and I had more than enough for 2 skirts. Another purchase you need to make is elastic thread. Trust me. This will ensure that the skirt can go over your hips without busting the threads.{thanks for the tip Jill}

Begin by cutting your fabric to the length and width that you are comfortable with. I used pinking shears so that I wouldn't have to hem all of the edges. Remember that you wear the skirt high on your waist which is a much smaller than where you wear your jeans. Unless you wear those old school mommy jeans. {wink} And you'll need to leave it long enough for the hem.

Iron, pin, and hem the bottom of your skirt.

Choose your longest stitch and sew a gathering stitch along the top of your skirt.

Measure your elastic and cut. Gather your fabric to fit your elastic band. Then pin it to the elastic and change out your bobbin thread to elastic thread. If you have a bobbin case, you will wind it loosely by hand. If yours is drop in like mine, then just wind it like you normally do.

Sew your fabric to the elastic band. Then you can remove your gathering stitch if you like.

Now all you need to do is pin the right sides together and sew the seam.

That's all folks! So easy right.

Modifications: You could totally use a patterned fabric or colored elastic. I even made smaller versions for my little sweet peas!

Honestly, I really excited about making lots of other skirts. I was so nervous to make something wearable for myself, but it was quick, easy, and it even made it through the wash without falling apart!{wink}

So tell me, what do you think? Any suggestions for my next wearable project? If so, leave me a link.

  4. What a cute outfit. I love the skirt you made. I will have to try and make it once summer is over. I just got back into sewing int he spring but haven't touched my machine once summer hit as we are trying to soak up every last minute of sunshine before fall hits. I also love your ruffled clutch. Such a cute pop of colour.
